Congratulations to the students on another brilliant production at prizegiving. The students performed their version of the Nutcracker. Also well done to Lisa and the other staff for putting this together. Also congratulations to our prize cup recipients. What a great year everyone has had.
At the end of term 4 we had two Fire Officers, who just happen to parents of a couple of our students, come along to school and teach us about fire safety and learn how to use fire extinguishers effectively and how to put out different kinds of fires (when to use an extinguisher and when not to). The students also got to go for a ride in the fire engine.
Well done to the students who got into the Bush Athletics. Zara, William, George, Jed, Ivy, Lucy and Jimmy represented Makuri at the Bush Athletics. Some of our representatives competed in up to 6 events. This would have been a big day. It needs to be acknowledged that this event was only a couple of days after the Rural Schools Athletics so there were a few bodies still in recovery mode. Below are the results of the day. Lucy - 1st place in 200M for 9 year old girls Jimmy - 3rd place in discus for 8 year old boys George - 3rd place in shot put for 10 year old boys
Well done to Jimmy and Croydon who both got a trophy at the RDA Christmas Lunch & prizegiving. Both awards were for Tuesday riders. Jimmy - rider of the year. ???? Croydon - most improved. ???? Well done to both boys.
Towards the end of November the students were at Wai Splash, Dannevirke for a swimming lesson. With these Wai Splash experiences, swimming lessons that some students are doing outside of school and the time we have in our school pool there are noticeable shifts in the swimming skill and confidence of our students.
The students in the senior and junior rooms have been working with the numicon maths resource this term. Miss Paton and Mr G. are working on embedding this into our maths programme and will continue in the new year.
A few weeks ago we participated in the Rural Schools Athletics in Pahiatua. It was a great day and well organised. The Makuri students had prepared well this year so we are proud of their efforts. We have a good sized group of students that have performed to a standard that saw them go to the Bush Athletics.
Last week we held our pet day. The weather was in great form with warm and dry conditions. There were the usual stalls in operation before the main event. There were a large number of lambs in the junior pets and a large number of dogs in the senior pets. Other pets included a hen and Shadow the Bunny.
For the craft section we had a secret garden with recyclable materials, cyanotype art and an organic animal art piece.
The students all did extremely well.
For the latest Bush day the students spent the day at school. Here we focused on skills that would benefit the students in the bush. The students were shown aspects of fire lighting, bivi making and tying of knots.
On Friday the 1st of November the year 1-6 students travelled into Pahiatua. Once there we spent the day with an information scavenger hunt in the town centre, visits to the Polish memorial (south of the town), and the town library. After this we participated in the parade. The school found a key location in the middle of the town (on the railway land on the corners of Mangahao Road and the main street. Here we waved flags and welcomed the returning Polish residents of the camp all those years ago back in 1944.
When we went to Palmerston North for our gymnastic lesson we also visited Te Manawa and saw the Sunlight – Ihi Kōmaru exhibition. Sunlight – Ihi Kōmaru offers visitors the chance to get hands-on with Earth’s star at room temperature – no sunscreen required! There were alot of hands-on practical stations at this exhibit. This provided a good opportunity for the children to explore through action as well as reading and learning about the sun and sunlight. There was a model to show how much larger the sun is compared to our planet Earth. There was some good information about light refraction with colours however the most popular activity was the sprint race that timed the students and then converted this information to give them a time it would take for them to travel from the Earth to the Moon.
A couple of weeks ago we travelled to Palmerston North for a gymnastic lesson with Manawatu Gymsports. The students were able to have a go on more specialised gym equipment. Here they can really have a go at putting their practice efforts to the test. There was a large sprung floor, various sizes of trampolines and crash pads. There are rings, a climbing rope. Even and uneven bars, an arrangement of balance beams at various heights. The students had a great time with their instructors.
Last week we had our first bush day for the term.
We’ve been participating in the Chill Out & Read program. Students who completed five tasks from the program’s booklet were rewarded with a book and a pizza wheel. Today Wyn from the Tararua Library visited our school to present the prizes. We’re grateful to the Tararua Library for this fantastic program.
We had 3 students attend the Solway College & Comag Wairarapa Interschool Dressage event in Masterton. We added a student from a different school, completing our team of four. They performed excellently, securing 2nd place in the junior team section.
Thank you to Rabobank for the beautiful set of George the farmer books. We entered to win a set and were lucky enough to win one of the set of books. These books are about educating children where their food and fibre come from. I’m sure the students will love reading these books as much as Miss Paton did.
When the senior students were at Pongaroa the Y4's down had a fun day with Miss Paton. They had a fire truck come and visit. They also did some maths with numicon and made numicon biscuits.
This day is a great day for the students. Alfredton, Pongaroa and Makuri schools came together. These activities are wonderful opportunities for our senior students to learn with peers their age.
The students learnt about trees and birds and pests. There were some trapping pointers as well. Makuri students showed their knowledge here.
Speech night was held last Thursday evening. There was a great turn out of community members and the Makuri children were able to deliver their well prepared speeches to a good size audience. The judges had an enjoyable time and spoke highly of the children’s efforts. Thank you to our judges Jane & Clint. The student representing Makuri at the Bush speechmaker’s competition is Zara. Ivy was runner up this year. Well done to everyone. You all did a fantastic job.
The Makuri students went into Pahiatua for a visit to Tararua College. The college was hosting the Science Roadshow. This is a great event that has been occurring on an annual basis for a number of years. Here we joined students from Pahiatua school and were greeted by the wonderful Science Roadshow presenters. There were two great presentations about a wide range of science topics. In between these presentations the students were able to explore the many interactive science displays and activities. The students had a great time.
The junior students had a great camp where they camped overnight in the school. The next day the children were up early and packed ready for an adventure in Masterton. They visited the Go Zone, swimming pools and the park before coming home.
Last week our Y5-8 students attended a 7 a-side tournament in Pahiatua. Schools from all over the Tararua district were participating. We had students playing rugby, soccer and hockey. They did really well and enjoyed the day.
The last day of term 2 our students went to Woodville to watch the show. Other schools were there as well. We listened to the tale of how Maui slowed the sun. Matiu Te Huki is a very talented storyteller. He adds elements of music and beat to his stories which is very captivating. Afterwards, we were taught a lot about Haka, and how it can be a great way to release feelings good and bad. This was a really nice way to end a term.
We participated in the Cultural Festival in Pahiatua. The students did extremely well.
Harold and Holly visited Makuri last term and worked with the students on a number of topics from food nutrition and what food does to our bodies to empowering children to solve problems in the playground.
