Rural Schools Athletics 2025

This week we attended the Rural Schools Athletics in Pahiatua and it was one of those days where the weather couldn’t make up its mind. The event went ahead despite this and fortunately we had a good day. The conditions were muggy but overcast most of the day which was to the participants' benefit. The Makuri students participated extremely well. We were really well supported by parents and overall it was another great event. The rain did threaten towards the end of the day which resulted in the 800m and Relay events being cancelled.

Duffy Books in Homes Assembly 2025

On Wednesday we had our Duffy Books in Homes assembly and we were incredibly honoured to have Nathan Hoturoa Gray present the books to our students. We also got Nathan to present the Scholastic Duffy Champion Award. This award celebrates the champion in your school community who has been an ambassador of books or reading, and reinforcing the messages of Duffy Books in Homes, It’s cool to read! It was awarded to Miss Paton. Nathan graduated from Victoria University with an LLB(Hons) and BA in Political Science and International Relations. He’s currently based in the United States, where he runs study abroad programmes for Michigan State University (MSU), the globally top-ranked university for education abroad. Rather than focus entirely on being a lawyer Nathan combined travel and writing resulting in walking the entire length of the Great Wall of China, writing a book about it and a documentary of the journey shown on National Geographic channel. He has covered many different global events including the Beijing Olympics, the Boxing Day Tsunami in Thailand and three soccer world cups. What a wonderful speaker Nathan was. He had everyone engaged from start to finish and the children asked him some really interesting questions.

7 Aside Tournament 2025

The Year 5-8 students played their hearts out at the 7s Tournament Wednesday, in cool, damp conditions but at least it didn’t rain. It certainly didn’t deter the students either. Two of the teams Y5&6 Hockey and Y7&8 Rugby had the bare minimum of players so no subs and very little rest. The Combined Schools junior hockey team still managed to come 2nd and there was a very exciting final with the Y 7 & 8 hockey team against St Anthony’s also coming second 2 goals to 1. Behaviour and sportsmanship was outstanding from all students.
